I was an I-Brancher and plank-owner of the new NSGA Galeta Island facility in 1965. 
My memory's a bit hazy so the events are sketchy at best. Overall, I enjoyed my 
short tour (was transferred to Gitmo w/13-hours notice) where I became a YN3. 
Used to love the night train rides to/fm Colon to Panama City YMCA and weightlifting 
and dances during breaks. I remember many faces but very few/any names of shipmates 
at GI except CDR Robinson and I believe Richard Lohr one of the nice guys aboard. 
Another I believe was a (CT3?)Benson. Helped organize flag football team (P/O Polumbo?) 
vs the Army forts in the area. One of highlight of tour was hiking from GI to Panama City
 (about 50 miles) via the train tracks. One of few who I think made it was Lohr. and maybe 
Benson. Loved my tour in Gitmo followed by two years in Rota, Spain. Too bad thigs didn't 
work out at GI but I was young, immature and stupid back then (mostly stupid). I eventually 
retired in 11/1984 as a IS1 (Intell Spec). Had pleasure of working for CT1 Clyde Lopez 
(later retired as CAPT) at NSGA Key West 1963-65 and as a civilian DOD contractor.

Spear fishing and snorkeling the reefs are what I enjoyed the most. Stopping for empanadas at the Margarita commissary on the way to work. Driving to the post office to pick up the mail. French fried onion rings at the yacht club - sounds classy but it was not.

wants to go to Panama, just say the word!" I did, and I was so glad I did. 
I got there as a seaman, and I made second class in that short of time. 
My CO was Bob Engh and I worked for GySgt Tedder Perry. I saw where 
Mike White posted..I also knew Lori Florick and Barb Sweet. My best 
buddy there was Rich Moskola. Later in my career, I traversed the 
Panama Canal seven times and loved every minute of it. Of course, there 
was a lot of angst at seeing the old wullenwebber rotting and then going away.

As a Spanish linguist, I greatly enjoyed my time at Galeta Island and learning about Panama and the 
canal zone: The "zonies" housing, stores, schools, police force -- its own colonial empire; vestiges 
of the old Coco Solo WWII seaplane base, hangars, piers, and buildings (now long gone); the daily 
deluge between 1 and 2 p.m. (followed by the intense heat and humidity -- not so much); the leaves 
of the "grass" that closed up during the rains and left footprints that faded away like a ghost after you 
walked across it; the train thru the rain forest to Panama city; transiting canal on a banana boat on a 
crystal clear night in Feb 1972; watch section jaunts to El Valle and Rio Mar; flag football, volleyball, 
swimming, tennis (at night); the straight-backed starched scary "guardia nacional" in Colon; the Cu?a 
indians and their colorful molas; nightly movies and playing pin ball in the EM Club; biking to Gatun 
Locks and watching the ships cruising through the jungle pulled by the "mules",...,And, of course, the intense comradeship

I had duties as an A Brancher, T Brancher and R Brancher. I arrived as a CTTSN, and since 
there were hardly any new SNs arriving, I was still cleaning heads and swabbing decks when 
I left as a CTT2! Had a great time there. My first chief was Dave LaCourse. Several of us had 
dirt bikes and rode a lot in the jungles. I took flying lessons and got my pilot's license at the 
Old France Field Air Club. Flew all over Panama. Again, great memories.

I had many great times and many boring times. My unit stayed in Coco Solo we had individual housing 
for single marines at the time. Our unit had to run the 5 mile road to each time we were startig our shift at
