__________GEOGRAPHY & CLIMATE

_____________The U. S. Naval Communication Station Philippines is located
__________adjacent to a fishing barrio just north of the municipality of
__________San Antonio, Zambales Province, Island of Luzon, Republic of the
__________Philippines. Called San Miguel, after the name of the barrio, the
__________station is 26 miles north of the sprawling U.S. Naval Base, Subic
__________Bay.

_____________The communications complex at San Miguel is 2,158 acres of
__________sandy soil a few feet above sea level. The climate, although un-
__________like any found in the United States, is generally pleasant and
__________comprises three seasons: hot, rainy, and cool.

_____________The hot season, from March through May, gives way to the
__________rains which sometimes soak the station with as much as 10 to 15
__________inches of rain a day. During this period, umbrellas, raincoats,
__________boots, and other rain gear are a neccesity. Usually the rainy
__________season ends in mid-October with the arrival of the "cool season."
__________This stretch of pleasant weather is comparable to late spring in
__________the States. Nights are generally cool enough during this time to
__________require light blankets.

_____________Typhoons occur sporadically, usually between May and December.
__________The command provides adequate guidelines which insure minimum
__________damage from the storms. The station usually escapes the destruc-
__________tive winds of the typhoons due to the protection on three sides
__________by mountains.
