Carlton A. Cox, CTR1 USN, 1962-1971 My memory of how I became a CT run somewhat along the lines of John Armstrong's. I had taken typing in High School, my reasons somewhat different, I needed the 1 credit to graduate not a somewhat sexy teacher. I learned how to type, albiet not as fast as they wanted me to but I did pass the course. I joined the Navy under the "Kiddie Cruise" program and was gauranteed(sp) a "A" school in the process. In the testing process I guess I remembered the code a little better than others and the typing helped. By the way I was in "Hall of Fame Company 247" summer of 1962. In my interview I was told that I would fit in just fine in this "New" rating of CT that he knew nothing about. He told be I would be going to Pensacola Florida for many months of school. Knowing I would be going to Florida for the winta and not really knowing what I wanted to do anyway, I had wanted to join the Navy forever but didn't know what I wanted to do once I got there, I said I'm in. The CT community was one of the best things that happened to me in my life. After 9 years in the Navy I did decide to try something else and my 23 years as a Professional Fire Fighter in my home town was just as rewarding. I'll never forget my time in either profession. The big difference is I go to reunions (Smokey Mountain Chapter Spring Flings) of Navy folk, the Fire Department doesn't do this at all. Also I was a Communications Technician, never was a Cryptologic Technician. Carlton "Carl" Cox
