Names for 19 of the sailors (not in any order of appearance) :
Doug Poag (Tennessee), Len Matiya; Ron Fleshman; J. F. Smith, Jr; Phil O'Keefe; Chet Rebuck; Dennis Otter
(Alaska);
Elroy C. Banks, Jr (DC); Bill Harnisch; Jim Holden; Bob Bruno
(alias Travis Oliver Tyree); John A. Cannon; Robt. T. Frederick;
Gordon "Scottie" Milne (South Dakota); Barney Smith; Bob "zasu" Pitts; Roman Martin
(Iowa); Paul "Groucho" Pollock; Ken Morlock; and Instructor Roth CTR1 (Maine).
Pollock's father was a navy man. Harnisch had 13 years in the Navy as a BM
and was converted to CT. Elroy Banks' grandmother owned apartments in
Washington DC. Scottie Milne was a telegrapher for the railroad before
coming into Navy. Dennis Otter was from Anchorage, AK. Roth was from
Maine and I think got out after leaving IB. I obtained my commission in
1960 and stayed in the Reserves, retiring in 1989 but am most proud to say
I started as an E-1 in January 1953.
J. F. Smith, Jr is the character about which there was some discussion
earlier this year. He was originally from Providence, RI and had a way of
saying it like Providence and associated colonies, Rhode Island. He had a
grey streak in his hair.
John Cannon was wild and crazy. Might have been from Oregon but I'm not sure.
Hope this adds to the mix.
Roman G. Martin, Capt., USNR(Ret)
