_____________Off-station travel by private vehicle is often dangerous due
__________to road conditions. Night driving is especially hazardous because
__________of lack of normal safety devices. Roads are narrow, usually in
__________need of repair, and carry a heavy amount of slow moving traffic--
__________this includes carabao-drawn carts, jeepneys, and pedestrians.
__________Speed limits range from 10 kilometers per hour (about 6 m.p.h.)
__________to 70 k.p.h. (about 43 m.p.h.). Filipino pedestrians abound, and
__________the American driver in the countryside must be extremely wary.
__________TRANSPORTATION
_____________Transportation on station is accomplished by walking, bicycle,
__________motor scooter, motorcycle, car or jeepney. The jeepneys are jeep-
__________like vehicles peculiar to the Philippines, contracted for by the
__________Navy Exchange and charge 10 cents per person per trip.
_____________Watchstanders and dayworkers are bussed between the barracks
__________and the various working sites.
_____________Navy buses are provided for the trip between San Miguel and
__________Subic Bay Naval Base at no charge. There is no scheduled trans-
__________portation between San Miguel and Manila, but Consolidated Special
__________Services at Subic Bay provides a daily bus to Manila and back for
__________a nominal fee. Also, Special Services San Miguel maintains a
__________fleet of air-conditioned sedans and minibuses for rental to al-
__________most anywhere on Luzon. The rental fee includes gasoline and
__________driver.
