Reliving my old times at Todendorf. The Oase and the Metropol. Turned 71 in April. Did not know if it was still operational. Remember the day the Pueblo was seized. Angelino Strano used to be on of our Mat men till he was sent to the Pueblo. Great memories. Would like to go back one day!!!!,cola rum in Great LOL Also Remember Hans the bartender at The Club. The slots and rolling dice. Remember the day the Brits came in for AA drills and we all got in a big fit at The Metropol. Saw Barry Kissel sent an e-mail. Served in Special Ops. Most people would not believe we were copying satellites. Lt. Potts set up the whole NRL computer room. Had the the pleasure to sit next to Reid Mayo when we discovered the,"Hen House" OTH in Russia. Good times and great food. Lived in Panker after got married in 68 Cajun. Went back and yes I got there on X-mas Eve 1966. Two days later my psuedo brother Al Tracy, we enlisted together, he chose the USMC. He was killed in Nam. Never will forgive the CO at the time. A LCDR fuller. Would not let me go back for his burial. Spent years there. If anyone knows if Chief Cargile or Chief Ronnie Brooks is still around e-mail me. Had a " mustanger" for the XO. He was dynamite. Can't remember his name. Still have my Mug from the Club that was kept behind the bar. Will send pics if needed. There were some nice people stationed there and some of the worse I had experienced in my Navy career. I worked the eve-day-mid schedule which was very difficult for a married man with children. Our housing was in Klausdorf, some distance from the base. I did enjoy being in Germany and made some nice German friends. I had been stationed in Rota, Spain, for three years prior to my Todendorf tour and got to see much of Western Europe during the five plus years I was stationed in Europe. I went from Todendorf to the USS Jamestown off Viet Nam. I had been stationed aboard the USS Hornet before Spain. After Todendorf it was good to be back at sea in the real Navy again.,,M. L. My prior assignment WAS to have been on one of the following:,USS Palm Beach, USS Banner, or USS Pueblo. While I was there, CT1 Borges and CTSN Bob Jones got married. ,,I don't know what happened to "Zeke". Maybe he married the girl at the nearby cantina. During a mid-watch, our supervisor, CT1 Chris Waldron "observed" our station was about to be overrun by "The Charlies". 'Tossed me the keys to the rifle cabinet, and I handed everyone Garands and ammo. I followed everyone else out in the dark to the perimeter fence, wondering why I couldn't insert the magazine from the bottom. (Great Lakes had trained me with Harrington and Richardson .22 rifles!) Maybe I shouldn't have defeated Chief (Van ?) at Ping-Pong, 'cuz I got transferred to Rota shortly afterwards. I drove to Rota with two other CTs (DeFriese & ?) in my newly-purchased 1964 BMW 1800. Stopping the drive temporarily, we watched the "1968 24 Heures du Le Mans" race from the infield and days later, visited Ibiza and Mallorca Islands (Spain). Did some cliff-diving! Remember "WATCH THE WATER" when you flushed the toilet? And the night we hid all the doors before a big deal inspection. Not wrapping the flag pole rope so the OOD was up all night with the banging. Spinning donuts in the German Grinder. Exchanging a white hat for a full German Dress Cover at Mudies. Standing at attention when the Beatles song came on. Sitting out in the middle of the field one Sunday with all of Alex Fava's Dylan albums and lots of beer. Always a case of Lowenbrau behind the back seat of a VW. Copenhagen on the weekends. The winter in the German barracks. I rode a bicycle and wore a long red scarf the brass never cared for. Calling the coke machine in the barracks "The Breakfast Machine". Movies at the club. "Cool Hand Luke" every night one week. Midnight mass in Kiel. Driving that CT to Bremerhaven with orders to the Pueblo and hearing on the drive back it hat been captured. The supply runs to Bremerhaven and shopping for the married guys and their family's. Running the life saver up the flag pole. And of course "In Nam the guns were going day and night". I replaced a SK3 after a file cabinet fell on him after he wrote his congressman about "Shady Deals". I could never get the parts you guys needed no mater who signed the request or what priority they were. Digging deep holes on the beach to get out of the wind. And of course the Germans. And the bar in Lutchenberg we never went in, WWII vets. And the road signs "Germany Divided? Never". Duty at the Tod was a challenge. I went from the classic ELINT side to the Projects side of the street after spending detail time at the Dahme site. Was there when Ivan decided to squelch the upstart Checks in Aug '68; that was a little tense. Was in Spec Proj's when we remodled the spaces and joined the computer age. Liberty at the Tod was hard to take, being so dedicated and all, but we made time for it. I don't remember any bad times (though the new CO's arrival in summer of '69 comes close), and some times I can't remember much of. The locals were fun to know, and some were a pleasure to romance. Our skills at soccer were pretty abysmal, but at the games of tipping the boot and Rota Korn "prost-x" we could hold our own. Life and times at the Tod sure beat my sbsequent tours on "the Rock" in the northern Pacific as well as the armpit of southern California (SD), where I terminated my association with the USN. 3/28/2012 1.FullName: Steven Petersen 2.NickName: Pete 3.ArriveDate: June 1968 4.DepartDate: May 1970 5.RateRating: CTM3&2 6.Duty: Todendorf 7.Email: swpete@centurylink.net 8.OnLineRoster: No 9.Comments:
