USS Caron DD-970 was the initial east coast Spruance Outboard
ship. A lot of good CT's and cryptologic officers paid dues in
Caron. Caron was decommissioned and plans were to use her as a test hulk. At the time of her sinking (as a hulk) she was involved in some proximity testing (explosives) when an unintended secondary occurred. Caron sank. ... not the desired result. As is apparent from the photo, she went to the bottom with the outboard mast (forward) in place. |
