John "Richard" Cayori (coyoteeee), CTO2 USN 1965-1969 After I graduated from high school in 1962 I went off and on to college for 3 years trying to find a direction in life. Not being a fan of college life, I decided to join the Navy. I went in on a Monday and the following Wednesday my draft card arrived in the mail at home. My mom took it down to the Navy recruiter and he said: “I’ll take care of this. We’ve got your son now.” I went to San Diego for Boot Camp in the middle of the winter, but since it was in California it wasn’t so bad. I scored high on my test scores and they told me I would be sent to a “radio technician school” in Florida. I went to Corry Field around March of 1966 and started R school. I hated code and never got past 16 wpm. I bombed out of R school. However, since my typing scores were near 100%, they told me that I could try out locally for the “O” training. Plan B would have been shipped out to sea. I waited a while for my clearance before being able to start the “O” training. They told us that the 1st and 2nd best in the class could choose their next duty station. I was first in my class and Jim Cummings was 2nd. We both chose Edzell, Scotland or Spain and got sent to CINPACFLT in Pearl Harbor for the next two years. From there I went to Keflavik, Iceland for my last year of duty. It was like going from a sauna into an icy swimming pool! All in all, I had great duty stations! I loved every minute of being a CT and felt very fortunate to be associated with a great group of guys. I tell people that being in the Navy was a defining moment in my life and I will always cherish the memories.
