Sal DeAngelis, CTT3 USN/USNR, 1970-1982 I graduated High School in Franklin Square, NY in 1968 and then moved on to college, part-time evenings in Farmingdale NY while working on Wall Street for a Brokerage Firm trading stocks and bonds. I made the mistake of dropping below the required 15 credits in college and was rewarded with a Draft Notice in April of 1970 from Uncle Sam. I was not looking foward to spending any time in the Army, and one of the other traders that I had spent alot of time with had a real strong interest in both the Liberty and Pueblo incidents, and had prior time as a CT in the late 60's. I was very interested in the minimal amount of information that he was able to share with me, and I decided that I wanted to enlist and see if I could get into the CT rate. I enlisted in May of 1970, did boot camp in Great Lakes ( Company 929 ) and based upon my GCT/ARI's, I had my choice of either CT school or Nuclear Subs, I chose CT school. I ended up being side tracked in "S.I.D." for a month (I found out later that my Company Commander thought I would be a good candidate for Navy Seals/UDT and he had arranged for me to be sent to "S.I.D."), however, I did not want any part of it, and I was able to talk to a Marine "Gunney" about my prior selection for CT "A" school in Pensacola and I was eventually reassigned to another RTC Company ( 173 ) and graduated Boot Camp three weeks later. I went on to Pensacola, completed "A" school for the "T" branch rating and then went to Winter Harbor (Siss Zulu) and then on to Adak (Siss Zulu). I passed the 2nd class "T" branch test in 1973, however I was told I could not add the stripe because I had less than 90 days remaining on my enlistment, hoever, if I "re-upped" for another four years, I would get the stripe and I was promised Edzell for my next duty assignment. I made the biggest mistake of my life in 1974 when I chose to return to New York and civilian life (due to pressure from my wife - now my "ex"). I did however enlist with a Navy Reserve unit at Freeport, NY that had an active duty "mission" with NavSecGru (Edzell 101/Winter Harbor 102), and I remained with the Freeport Security Group Reserve unit until 1982. I have never, to this day, had a more gratifying job than when I was a member of the Naval Security Group. There was always a quiet understanding of how significant the contribution was that the CT ratings were making on a daily basis.
