Alan J. Schwarz, CTRC USN Retired, 1947-1967 I may be the only person to become a CT (eventually) because I was from New York! Graduated from high school in June, 1947, turned 18 in September, and joined the Navy in October, 1947. Boot Camp at GLakes, got 10 days Christmas leave, and met an old family friend, a Navy RM1 who told me to study I-N-T and ask for radio school. After boots in early 1948 got orders to RM"A" school in Norfolk because I aced the I-N-T- test. On graduation day at RM school, the chief came in with a handful of orders for us. He asked, "Anybody live in New York?" Louie Bell and I raised our hands, and we had orders to CommSec. in Bellmore, LI, NY. I was RMSA, RMSN, and RM3 at Bellmore. Louie got out after Bellmore, and I went to CinCLantFlt Hdqtrs in Norfolk with CommSec. Then to Gtmo Bay with CommSec, and from there to IB, again with CommSec. After 2 years with CommSec at IB I received orders to CT school at the same place. I had made RM2 at IB and had also passed the test for RM1 but didn't get advanced until the November increment, when I was on Adak. While on Adak I was RM2, RM1, and had my rate changed to CT1 by the Bureau. From Adak I went to Kami Seya, then to Northwest, then to Cyprus where I made chief, then on to Edzell (I was OWO the day JFK was shot in Dallas, in 1963). Then to Cheltenham, MD, and finally to the USS LIBERTY AGTR-5, where I was the Ops Chief. I retired from the Navy on 1 May, 1967 from the LIBERTY, the day before she left Norfolk on her final, and fatal trip to Africa/Med. I earned my Shellback Certificate on my first cruise to Africa on the LIBERTY. That's the story, and I'm sticking with it! Alan J. (Pete) Schwarz, CTRC, USN, Retired
