William M. Herod CTM1 1966-1976 I got my draft physical notice in 1966 at 23 years old and married. Deciding I would rather not be drafted into the Army, I enlisted in the USN, experienced Winter boot camp at Great Lakes, and assigned to GLAKES Basic Electricity and Electronics. There I was introduced to NAVSECGRU by a first class CT who had never been to sea in his eight years. I decided that was for me. My first day at my first non-school duty station at NSGA San Vito, Italy, ('68-'69) was immediately after the Pueblo was seized. I wondered what I had gotten myself into. From there to Hanza, Okinawa for 3 1/2 years ('70-'73) and then to DIA at Arlington Hall Station, VA. Not especially fond of my duty at DIA and the Washington DC area, I had one job interview, accepted a job offer, and left the Navy in June 1975. One job interview. I was THAT close to making the USN a career after 9 years in. I really enjoyed the Navy and SECGRU and was a little sorry to leave it behind. My M branch experience led to a 40 year career after the Navy.
